LIEBE IST KÄLTER ALS DER TOD
LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH
This is a prodigious debut film, a revisionist film noir as stark in its visual style as it is powerful in its seething, but repressed emotions, and with a wonderfully sardonic sense of humor. Even as it draws on his work in theatre, Liebe ist kälter als der Tod points to the forty films which were to come in terms of its themes, aesthetic techniques, and psychological insights. But this is no mere warm-up for later triumphs (and tribulations); it seems more resonant with each subsequent viewing, and a third of a century after that fateful premiere, this film still feels fresh, strange, and resonant in its chillingly casual violence and unspoken, sometimes heartbreaking, passion.
