In 1974, the leaders of the German Democratic Republic awarded an artists collective the contract to build a group of monuments to Marx and Engels in the center of East Berlin. In 1981, Jürgen Böttcher started to record the development of the monument and produce a feature-length documentary. The film was never finished because both the theme and the monument were rejected by the people. The 15,000 metres of 35mm film disappeared into the archives. In 2000, Jürgen Böttcher used this archived material as well as new material shot exclusively on the Marx-Engels Forum to produce this collage, a critical look at history and art in the new heart of Berlin.
