Selected examples of a New Cinema

Backed by an alternately rollicking and melancholy score by Justin Hurwitz, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench tracks a pair of young lovers after they meet by chance in a Boston park and bond over a passion for old-timey music. But like his constantly searching camera, Damien Chazelle doesn't linger too long in any one place in the story. Soon Guy and Madeline are separated and searching for new romance on city streets and in smoke-filled jazz clubs.
I think jazz and cinema struck a beautiful relationship in the ’50s and ’60s, and I’d like to try to recapture that; these are art forms born at the same time, and they can feed off each other in amazing ways. If I followed an improvisatory style in Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, it’s maybe because that’s what made me feel closest to those great jazz players. (Damien Chazelle)
