While arresting criminal Zhang Yidong, Sergeant Tong Fei accidentally kills the older daughter of public prosecutor Gao Min. But just as Zhang is to go on trial, one of his henchmen kidnaps her younger daughter, Ling. Gao Min is informed that if she ever wants to see Ling alive again, she must drop all charges against Zhang. Tong Fei swears that he will rescue Ling, seeking to redeem himself for his mistake. Thrillers about personal redemption, botched kidnaps and flawed heroes are nothing revolutionary, but when they are executed with such aplomb they certainly stand out from the crowded field. Lam builds a particular Hongkong world for the story,
using Cheung Man-po and Tse Chung-to’s exceptional cinematography to emphasis the grit, grime and constant industrialisation of the surroundings. (Andrew Saroch)
