Wisit Sasanatiengs erstaunlicher Debütfilm ist eine Hommage an ein Genre, das die meisten von uns gar nicht kennen: thailändische Bühnen- und Filmmelodramen der 50er und 60er Jahre. Wir werden auch nicht in der Lage sein, uns damit vertraut zu machen, denn kaum einer der Filme aus dieser Zeit ist archiviert, die meisten sind längst verschollen. Einer ihrer Haupteinflüsse war das klassische Hollywood-Melodram, also gibt es gewisse Bezugspunkte. Der junge Regisseur ist gerade alt genug, um eine entfernte Erinnerung an die Filme und Theaterstücke zu haben, die ihn inspieriert haben, aber es handelt sich vielmehr um eine liebevolle Neuerfindung.
Rumpoey and Dum first met as children. Rumpoey's wealthy family was evacuated from Bangkok during WW II. Dum's father, Dua, a village chief, gave them a temporary home in the countryside of Supanburi. An intimacy soon developed between the headstrong city girl and the shy country boy. They feel a strong attachment to each other and, nine years later, they meet again as students in Bangkok. Although Dum is expelled from college for fighting, trying to defend Rumpoey's honor, he promises to work hard, save money and marry her. But her father has other plans for Rumpoey.
