Yes, Hermann Nitsch did visit Los Angeles in the 1970s, and he influenced a generation of artists, notably Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley, but their provocations turned out goofy and sweet. As McCarthy told Marc Selwyn in 1993: «Vienna is not Los Angeles. My work came ... from kids' television in Los Angeles. ... there's a big difference between ketchup and blood ... My work is more about being a clown than a shaman.»
