George Lucas's final undergraduate project at the University of Southern California was vilified by the faculty when it first screened. «What's the point?» they asked. Just cars and speed. Not even a race, just a time trial (filmed on a desert track outside Los Angeles). Yet this radically minimalist film (without exposition, without dialogue) anticipates all his other films, from THX 1138 to Star Wars, and it can be argued that it is still his best.
