L Enfant follows the fate of pretty thief Bruno and his girlfriend, Sonia, who has just given birth to baby Jimmy. Faced with economic disaster, Bruno in his unthinking way sells Jimmy to unseen hands, precipitating Sonias mental collapse. His attempts to recover the baby then lead him further into debt and despair. The Dardennes usual handheld close-up style of shooting is most poignant here, following this young man through heart-stopping moments of grim suspense that somehow never tear the fabric of convincing naturalism.
