In 1999, Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub, famous outcasts of European filmmaking, finished their film<i> Sicilia!, </i>based on a novel by Italian writer Elio Vittorini, a film which is relatively accessible compared to other works by the couple. Portuguese director Pedro Costa, a devoted admirer of their work and a gifted filmmaker in his own right, shot this documentary while Huillet and Straub were re-editing their film at the Studio National des Arts Contemporains in Le Fresnoy, and discussing the process and the results with a group of film students.
