Un Couple épatant is structured like a romantic comedy. Alain, a small business owner, feels ill. He goes to see his doctor, who tells him there is nothing seriously wrong, but asks him to have a biopsy. When his behaviour becomes eccentric, Alains wife hires a cop to find out whats going on in his life. Afraid that he may be really ill, Alain decides to make a will, but when he grows suspicious that his wife is up to something, he starts to change its contents.
Belvauxs monumental project which runs over five hours allows him to deal with things unavailable to a director working within the conventional two-hour structure. Cubist in structure, La Trilogie creates a kaleidoscopic portrait of a troubled society, questions our notions of point-of-view and forces us to remember how certain events were depicted at different times and read by certain characters. The films are demanding and teasing, but Belvaux knows his world and paints his characters realities with precise affection. Stunningly shot, a model of concision, the project is open to multiple readings. (Piers Handling)
