South Korean director Hong Sangsoo's latest film Night and Day tackles the peculiar existential aimlessness of a traveller. Hong's first comedy to be set abroad, Night and Day brings us to Paris where Sung-nam, a celebrated painter in his early forties, has escaped to after almost being arrested in Seoul for smoking marijuana. Unable to speak even a word of French, Sung-nam finds himself gravitating to the city's Korean expatriate community. Whiling the weeks away in Parisian side streets and cafes, Sung-nam indulges in flirtations with acquaintances old and new, but inexorably his old life in Seoul is drawing him back.
