The story of Antonio das Mortes: A land baron (the Colonel) hires him to reestablish order in the region of Sertão. He is supposed to kill the rebel leader of a band of famished landless peasants. But after fulfilling his contract, Antonio switches sides and turns against the Colonel and his men.
To me, ANTONIO DAS MORTES embodies an innovative, revolutionary form of cinema, a new way of filmmaking (in terms of both production and style) that opens up wonderful perspectives to us. It is a political, a poetic and existentialist cinema, a “total” cinema in some ways, in which social battles are fought amidst myths and folk songs just like in this modest opera.
I never discussed this film, or Glauber Rocha, with Hans but immediately thought of him for this tribute. The film allows me to pay homage to Hans, his curiosity for the world and the cinema here and elsewhere, his boldness and the support he was able to give me. (Alain Guiraudie)
