Popsicles

In POPSICLES, Gloria Camiruaga films her teenage daughters reciting the Hail Mary while licking popsicles containing little plastic soldiers, an innocent act which alludes to the ever-present threat of brutal violence hanging over women in Pinochet’s reign. Camiruaga was a Chilean filmmaker and video artist whose work radically critiqued the dictatorship, patriarchy and the social turmoil that resulted from neoliberalism. She collaborated with fellow politically outspoken artists, including The Mares of the Apocalypse, Lotty Rosenfeld, and Diamela Eltit. (Dominga Sotomayor)
