Petite Maman - Als wir Kinder waren
Celine Sciamma returns to the Viennale for the 5th time with another delicate coming-of-age story, this time set in a fantasy dimension that glorifies the freedom and beauty of the universe of children. Following the sensational PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, the director captures another encounter that will define the identity of the protagonists, helping them in the hard task of growing up.
Nelly is a only child, she and her parents are spending few days in the house of her deceased grandmother to clean it up. When her mother Marion leaves without warning, Nelly starts playing around in the nearby woods, where she soon befriends a girl of her own age with whom she shares more than expected.
PETITE MAMAN is a fantastical tale that bends time and crushes the distance that keeps children and adults apart. With a simple idea and a small number of carefully crafted elements, the film manages to create a space for the untold, a whole realm of possibilities that overwhelms us and moves us at the same time. Thanks also to the magnificent work of Claire Mathon (who was also the cinematographer for SPENCER), PETITE MAMAN leads us into a mesmerizing universe in which every word pronounced echoes in the spectators’ souls.
