EL PLANETA, an autobiographically-tinged minimalist comedy starring the filmmaker herself and her mother Alejandra, takes place in Gijón, Spain, with its title stemming from the name of a bar located in the city where Amalia lived a large part of her life. In a style reminiscent of Miranda July, whose career could somehow be a model and inspiration for Ulman’s, the film is a deadpan account of the misadventures of Amalia (or Leonor, her fictional name) and her mother Ale (or María, in the film) over a few days in the Asturian city.
Although it does not have a traditional narrative, it could be described as the story of their quest to survive in the midst of the economic crisis through small deceptions that allow them to make (or save) some money, all while trying to avoid being thrown out of the house they live in at same time.
Shot in black and white in a style reminiscent of the New York indie cinema of past decades, EL PLANETA’s brief 75-minute running time works as a letter of introduction, at least in the world of cinema, to an artist who already has a place in the art world through her multimedia projects that also mix autobiography with invention.
