In addition to his collaborations with Kōji Wakamatsu in the field of soft pornography, Masao Adachi was a leading exponent of the Japanese experimental film movement, creating films such as CLOSED VAGINA and developing his own landscape theory with the work A.K.A. SERIAL KILLER. After attending the 1969 Cannes Film Festival, he went to Beirut, accompanied by Wakamatsu, and in 1971 they produced a propaganda film for the Palestinian revolution, RED ARMY/PFLP: DECLARATION OF WORLD WAR, in collaboration with the Red Army Faction and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In 1974, Adachi left Japan and joined the Palestinian revolutionary movement. After being arrested in Beirut in 1997, he made YŪHEISHA (2005) about a terrorist in the Japanese Red Army faction, Kōzō Okamoto. Telling the story of a revolutionary who keeps the vision of revolution alive, even in prison, the film is a historical review of armed resistance since 1968 and a philosophical analysis of what revolution means today.
