A Pool Without Water
Wakamatsu Koji
Japan 1982
103 min
OV w/ EN subtitles
V'21

Kōji Wakamatsu, who – along with Masao Adachi and Atsushi Yamatoya – had transformed soft pornography (pinku eiga) into revolutionary cinema in the late 1960s and early 1970s with films like VIOLATED VIRGIN, SEX JACK and ECSTASY OF THE ANGELS fought bitterly against the decline of revolutionary cinema, as did many of his colleagues. In 1969 he succeeded in producing PREY together with a major film company. In it, a rock singer who remains rooted in the past confronts the new hyper-consumption society with reggae and the force of arms. A POOL WITHOUT WATER followed a short time later. Inspired by an actual crime involving chloroform, Wakamatsu chose the same lead actor as in PREY, musician Yūya Uchida, and selected novelist Eiichi Uchida as screenwriter. The film shows the everyday madness of a railroad employee, but differs from Wakamatsu’s previous work in that it is not set on a political level, but brings a new, revolutionary point of view into play.
