Like its simultaneously halting and flowing title, Zuza Banasińska’s latest short views the delights and particular comforts of vintage 16mm industrial cinema through a precise, critical and frequently unsettling lens. Produced exclusively with material from Communist-era projects produced by the Educational Film Studio in Łódź, the uncanny and beguiling GRANDMAMAUNTSISTERCAT reveals the patriarchal biases and violence embedded in these films ostensibly produced for the betterment of all, distorting their original ideological aims in gratifying fashion.
