Filmmaker Friedl vom Gröller sits in her Vienna flat and smokes a cigarette as she delivers what is akin to an entire aesthetic creed in her own inimitable fashion, expressed as one casual, unassuming sentence, on the relationship between sound and image. Part of a series of films on inspiring women artists from prior generations, Christiana Perschon’s succinct portrait of vom Gröller assimilates its subject’s distinctive attitude towards technique and cinematic form—playful, personal, yet ever suggestive and precise—to paint a sympathetic picture of a kindred artisan on a single, unedited 16mm film roll.
