A boldly original journey into the wilds of Antarctica, Viera Čákanyová’s experimental documentary/science-fiction hybrid makes Werner Herzog’s ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD look like HAPPY FEET. After a deceptively conventional prologue in which a mournful voice narrates elegiac comments about the fate of the planet, Čákanyová plunges us into an exhilaratingly freewheeling meander across endless frozen terrain and expanses of beautiful but decidedly uninviting shale-grey water. Her drone-borne camera roves seemingly at will – and sometimes seemingly at random, insatiably curious and restless as it inspects seascapes, landscapes, and the disparate fauna who inhabit these challenging wilds. Usually with a quasi-divine (or perhaps quasi-AI) detachment, it observes seals, dolphins, penguins, gulls – and a handful of hardy humans. Enigmatic, elliptical sequences are accompanied and augmented by Stanislav Abrahám, Dominik Dolejší, and Miroslav Tóth’s breath-punctuated sound-design, which incorporates some gloriously unlikely radio “samples” in the film’s second half. Taken in toto, FREM is a dazzling sensory trip, one which demands to be experienced via the outsize screens and immersive audio that only cinema can provide. (Neil Young)
