This final Godard project would have been an adaptation of Charles Plisnier’s 1937 novel Faux Passeports. As it dragged on, Godard began to produce the film on paper as a preparatory scrapbook of words, images and sounds from his archives, the pages of which he handed over with time codes to be edited by Fabrice Aragno. In all its simplicity and radicality, this last film Godard completed and approved—perhaps even his best, as he told his collaborators—insists on leaving things open, showing how for him editing was the natural operation of a mind never at rest.
