Eszkimó asszony fázik

“Pick me up after work,” says Mari. She might be a waitress, a cook, a dishwasher. When Laci arrives, she is waiting for him in the middle of the restaurant with a band behind her, singing in all her glory. “Do you think I could be a singer?” she asks teasingly. This is the story of a love triangle between a deaf zoo worker, an internationally known piano player and an emerging underground icon: Mari. Her nickname is “Eskimo Woman”—she already has a style and her distinctive appearance guarantees her freedom. Then she reimagines herself for a moment of brief self-fulfilment on stage. The characters form a band and find themselves in the middle of a song, a performance about their life, before they even know what is going on. The band in the film is based on the real-life group Trabant, which was formed by Gábor Lukin, János Vető and Méhes, with occasional participation by Mihály Víg, composer of Béla Tarr’s films, who scored ESZKIMÓ ASSZONY FÁZIK and appears briefly in the film. Since their songs were never officially released, these performances grant a rare access to their music. In the end, Mari also escapes the rockstar image, floating away in the waves like the fish she wears as an earring. (Anna Babos & Simon Petri-Lukács)
