Friedl vom Gröller challenges two impossibilities of cinema: adapting a poem and filming your own death. The former relates to Bertolt Brecht’s The Drowned Girl. The filmmaker recites the Kurt Weil/Brecht version of the poem with an almost unreal childlikeness over images of corroding water. The latter emerges from the tender interplay of obscurity and the body of vom Gröller. She is mainly present as a voice, but at the end we see her silent face almost swallowed up by blackness. Thus the conflation of nature, poem, death and filmmaker draw sound and image into a beautiful black hole. (Patrick Holzapfel)
