A Metamorphosis
The surreal experience of staring at the small screen in a dictatorship is evoked in mysterious, jittery fashion in ASWÌN-PYÀUNG-LE-KYIN TA-KHÙ, which repurposes flickering video from Myanmar state TV into a slippery tract on the multivalent nature of propaganda. Shots of ceremonial spaces, shadows and water, a recurring water glass and a national flag that flutters day and night are augmented with cryptic lullabies seemingly read out by the country’s current dictator and a news ticker reporting on grandmas, dictators and dreams: an audiovisual metamorphosis into a still unstable form.
