Joanna Hogg has encapsulated her cinematic message for the Viennale in a trailer that also marks new territory for her as a director. Her small film, which she shot almost entirely on her own, both in front of and behind the camera, sends a message that is not only clear but is also powerful in its expressiveness. AWAKENING is an idea that combines all the energy of the moment
The foundation for this year’s festival subject is a motif from the Middle Ages that represents how unclear relationships can be, how interchangeable they are. It’s not clear here who the hunter is and who the hunted. Yet among the numerous versions and interpretations of this image over the centuries, there’s the one that toys with the idea that the hunt could become an encounter and that our expectations may be nothing more than prejudices.
As every year, our film program offers both profound as well as honest interpretations of the uncertainties and trends of our time, without losing sight of the tradition of cinema.
We also have the pleasure of welcoming our new president, Christian Petzold, whose most recent film MIROIRS NO.3 will open the 63rd Viennale. We’re delighted to share our view of the film world with him, to discuss the future and the responsibilities of the festival, and to exchange ideas on various issues. The media and the public will also be able to take part in the discussion. The opportunity to meet up and to converse is an essential part of the festival experience.

VIENNALE TALKS & VIENNALE GUESTS
Alongside numerous Q&A events, there will be other opportunities to meet up. A special talk between Ruth Beckermann and Avi Mograbi after the special screening of his film THE FIRST 54 YEARS. AN ABBREVIATED MANUAL FOR MILITARY OCCUPATION will provide opportunities to talk about the dramatic crisis in the Middle East and explain that there is no unified position on this issue. Several special encounters and talks with directors, organized in collaboration with drehbuchFORUM Wien, the Austrian Directors’ Association, and this year also with FC Gloria, will take place in the Kinosalon at Metrokino, one of our official venues.

Both international guests as well as directors and industry representatives from Austria will attend the Viennale.
An event worth mentioning is the special screening of IN-I IN MOTION, a documentary film directed by Juliette Binoche. The director and actress will appear in person as a guest of honor at the Viennale.

TEXTUR
The eighth edition of our Textur series is dedicated to an artist who cannot be ignored – Lucrecia Martel. On the occasion of her latest film, NUESTRA TIERRA (LANDMARKS), being presented at the Venice Film Festival, we’re seizing the opportunity to analyze Martel’s creative process within the context of the Textur series. Her process has gone through various phases and periods, but can at the same time also undoubtedly be interpreted as a path of continuity, consistency, and undoubtedly constant exploration.
Two essays, one by Luciano Monteagudo and one by Eduardo Cadava, offer a closer look from two different but complementary perspectives. Further stimulation is provided in the form of conversations with two of Martel’s key collaborators, director and actress María Alché, and Ernesto de Carvalho, one of the cinematographers on her latest film.
In addition to contributions by Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Kamal Aljafari, the publication is supplemented with photographic material, sketches, and notes. Filmmaker colleagues like Sylvain Zürcher and Kleber Mendonça Filho, but also critics from the cinema and art industry such as J. Hoberman and Cuauhtémoc Medina will also be present. The literary field is covered by two stories written by Eduardo Quiroga, which Lucrecia Martel very much likes.
