We are dedicating a monography to the visionary, critical work of the Los Ingrávidos collective. Its artistic practice transforms the rootedness in the origins of Mexican culture into the unmistakable and sharp indictment of present-day misrelations. An outstanding program curated by Gerwin Tamsma deals with the consequences of the Japanese occupation of South Korea; its main focus is on the political and social impact on culture in general and on filmmaking, in particular.
As part of our cooperation with the Filmarchiv Austria we’re introducing a great Austrian actor – Helene Thimig, whose international career has long deserved appropriate recognition. Our collaboratively organized Retrospective with the Filmmuseum is a unique opportunity to rediscover (or get to know again) Robert Kramer, an eminent filmmaker, who participated in the social conflicts and political protests of his time with enormous passion. Kramer’s filmmaking, characterized by constant searching in form and expression, addresses ideological paradoxes; we’re convinced that it can serve as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for us today.
This short preview introduces you to an edition of the festival that intensely deals with events that shake up our daily lives in all areas. Against the backdrop of conflicts for which there is no solution in sight and which have shockingly become part of our everyday existence, we have witnessed increasingly absurd moments of intolerance over the past year and in recent weeks. The recent Olympic Games may serve as an example of this.
This is the result of the ethical and social disintegration of an order that only thinks of politics in terms of large systems, thereby depriving solidarity-based associations of their strength and erasing the basis for a communal, community culture. But we are tirelessly searching for antidotes, not escape routes.
