If love unfolds in a perpetual present tense, we can only hope to grasp it via the traces it leaves behind. The relationship between celebrated French author and filmmaker Marguerite Duras and her partner Yann Andréa was impossibly complex, so complex that he even attempted to chronicle it himself, by way of a lengthy 1982 interview with journalist Michèle Manceaux that was never published as such.
The transcripts of these cassette recordings form the script of Claire Simon’s typically slippery new film, with Swann Arlaud as Andréa and Emanuelle Devos as Manceaux. The roles are fixed and so are the words, but the feelings they set in motion are not, for every reenactment produces something new and there is always a surplus. Literature, film, reception, admiration, inspiration, the writer in the work and the writer outside it, power, sexuality, submission: all these jostling ideas spill out of the text and seep into the spaces Simon has constructed around it, the room that looks out onto the landscape, ever moving towards twilight, beaches in mist and sun, dark stations and telephone boxes, scuffed archive footage of the woman herself. If the memory of love lies in its traces, we can only hope to grasp it in the present tense. (James Lattimer)
