Der filmende Landwirt überrascht sich und uns immer wieder neu: Pierre Cretons jüngster Film greift sogar auf Spezialeffekte zurück! Nicht von ungefähr lässt sein Titel an ein Märchen denken. Diese Fabel über die Botanik als Aphrodisiakum ist zugleich eine fantasierte Autobiografie voller erotischer Adoptionen, die sich im Gelingen der Lust erfüllen. Im Wendekreis von Begehren und Lernen gesellen sich zu vertrauten Gestalten aus Cretons normannischer Lebenswelt neue hinzu. Der zuweilen schelmische Off-Kommentar, im behänden Wechsel von Mathieu Amalric, Grégory Gadebois und Françoise Lebrun gesprochen, birst vor philosophischer und pornografischer Eleganz. The only child of a hunter and of an alcoholic mother, Pierre-Joseph begins his sentimental education at a horticultural academy, where his composed and thoughtful attitude catches the attention of the school’s founder and his botany teacher alike. Through several apprenticeships, his career as a gardener and his sexual life flourish in tandem, eventually coalescing into artistic expressions that range from filmmaking to the establishment of a gay porn herbarium. A filmmaker and gardener himself, Pierre Creton didn’t just shoot in his home region of Pays de Caux in Normandy, but also ends up lending his own features to this central character, proving just how personal the story is to him. Autobiography or autofiction? Either way, UN PRINCE is a wonderfully phantasmagorical tale that blossoms into an extraordinary literary specimen. A polyphonic narrative where each character’s inner voice is played by a different actor, the film also seems to grow downwards, as the story of another character who long remains invisible develops in symmetrical fashion to that of Pierre-Joseph. Climaxing in a fantastical encounter between the two of them, UN PRINCE delivers the stuff dreams are made of. (Antoine Thirion)
