(Bert Rebhandl)

Raúl Ruiz keeps on delivering films from the other world. He has good mediums, which also include his former wife. However, their latest accomplishment is an even greater one than before: to bring Ruiz’s first feature to the screen. Today, the film comes across as almost prophetic, a meditation on death and the irreversibility of time that unabashedly follows the logic of dreams to establish its narrative. “You no longer exist,” says a character about another. Its poetic cheek lies in how its actions disobey continuity and, halfway through the film, start moving backwards as if being rewound that adds a few new variations on what we already saw and heard. The plot? A man’s wife dies (or is murdered) and the man is unable to sleep and considers taking his own life. The rest of the film is Ruiz at his purest and wildest: a wig swirls around through the house; a woman’s feet appear under the bed; a dinner, a visit to a bookshop; a meeting with a friend – but all of these events are never quite just that. Freedom reigns absolute. (Roger Koza)
