Als Auftragskiller Ajo auf Leibwächterin Iteung trifft, ist es Liebe auf den ersten Hieb. Doch Ajo ist impotent – was Iteung zunächst nichts auszumachen scheint. Als sie dann aber doch eine Affäre mit ihrem Ex beginnt, macht das das Leben des Paares nicht einfacher – ebenso wenig wie verschiedene Gefängnisaufenthalte und ein androgyn wirkender Geist von der Müllhalde.
In Form einer hintergründig ironischen Actiongeschichte denkt Edwin in dieser Verfilmung eines Romans von Eka Kurniawan über tradierte Rollenmuster nach und schafft zugleich eine kleine Hommage an die Hongkong-Filme und die Popkultur der 1970er- und 1980er-Jahre. (Lars Penning)

Ajo Kawir is a fighter, and so is his beloved Iteung. Both of them are moved by violence and also sustained by it, in the precarious economy that keeps them afloat. They meet in a dusty quarry when trying to kill each other and fall madly in love.
Set in the late 1980s, during the Suharto dictatorship, VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH continuously tries to locate the ways in which violence builds and is built into every part of life, a life that demands that one either be macho or die.
It is violence that makes men impoverished, makes them fight, and makes them die. Tension ensues when the narrative turns into a love story in which the possibility of building love together is what can set the couple free. A love that is open, outspoken, fearless.
