Realm Of Satan

Irgendwie hatte man sie sich etwas wilder vorgestellt, die Satanistinnen und Satanisten. Statt beim Ausführen wüster Rituale sind sie hier jedoch beim Wäscheaufhängen oder Autoputzen zu sehen. Aber auch beim Binden eines Hexenbesens und Schmieden eines Dolchs. Immer wieder kommt es zudem zu bildlichen Irritationen, die an das Tor zum Reich des Horrors klopfen. Entstandenen ist dieser Film in Zusammenarbeit mit der „Church of Satan“, die sich als gegenkultureller Entwurf und Heimat der Ausgegrenzten und Marginalisierten versteht. Und so stellt sich wieder einmal die Frage, was die Verteufelten eigentlich mit dem Teufel zu schaffen haben? (Alexandra Seitz)

The Church of Satan was founded in 1966, and define themselves as “the first above-ground organisation in history openly dedicated to the acceptance of Man’s true nature—that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos that is indifferent to our existence”. REALM OF SATAN explores this organisation through a series of portraits of its members. Some hew close to everyday life, others draw on fiction to approach the supernatural, making use of various visual and poetic effects. Some focus on an individual, others are communal. Some are musical, others silent. Some delve into the criminal, others reveal a most particular sense of justice. These portraits bear a certain resemblance to the earliest silent films, recovering those vintage forms to depict a belief that wasn’t organised in the same way during cinema’s emergence. Satanists are their own gods, and this aspect of satanism is explored through its most sensual aspect: the aesthetic approach to existence, devoted to a particular beauty of things. Ravishing black costumes, eccentric make-up, rooms filled with salient detail, ornamental chalices, and bubbling beverages inhabit this film, made with the collaboration of many high priests and priestesses.
