What Do We See When We Look at the Sky?

(Bert Rebhandl)

Winner of the International Critics’ Prize at the Berlinale this year amid uniformly glowing reviews, RAS VKHEDAVT, RODESAC CAS VUKUREBT? is, remarkably, Berlin-based Georgian writer-director Alexandre Koberidze’s graduation project from “film school” (i.e. the capital’s German Film & TV Academy). In fact, Koberidze has been studying there for a dozen years, during which time his 202-minute debut LASS DEN SOMMER NIE WIEDER KOMMEN landed top honors at FIDMarseille. This follow-up clocks in at a relatively breezy 150 minutes, a running-time which flies by thanks to the picture’s beguilingly freewheeling energy. A magical-realist romantic fable about a star-crossed young couple kept apart by capricious fate, it does for the previously somewhat obscure eastern Georgian city of Kutaisi what several higher-profile works of cinema have done across the decades for Paris, New York and Tokyo. This is a place of celluloid dreams where almost anything can happen, such as stray dogs strategically deciding where to watch World Cup matches. Koberidze, also seen at this year’s Viennale in the lead role in Julian Radlmaier’s BLUTSAUGER, contributes his own deadpan narration – a piquant cherry on top of a sweetly intelligent confection.(Neil Young)
