Die Geschichte von Priscilla Beaulieu, die im zarten Teenager-Alter Bekanntschaft mit Elvis Presley machte. Der Rockstar im Steigflug erfuhr durch das Mädchen eine seltsame Erdung, für das Mädchen wiederum war es die erste Liebe; und auch eine Partnerschaft in großer Vertrautheit – die allerdings nicht von Dauer war. PRISCILLA ist die Adaption der Memoiren der Ex-Frau des „King“ in mehr gefühlvollen denn bewertenden Bildern, doch freilich entdeckt Coppolas analytischer Blick auch, dass dieses Leben letztlich durchwegs von Männern kontrolliert wurde. Für ihre sensible Darstellung in der Titelrolle erhielt Newcomerin Cailee Spaeny in Venedig die Coppa Volpi. (Matthias Greuling)

Sofia Coppola brings breathtakingly frank insight to the relationship between Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny) and Elvis Presley (Jacob Elordi), who met when the former was just 14. Coolly sticking to Priscilla’s point of view, the American director’s latest film follows their tender courtship in Germany, where her strict father and Elvis are stationed in the US military, to their life together on his Graceland estate in Memphis. Instead of getting caught up in Elvis mythology or chronology, the story shows a teenager coming into her own, joining the many girls and women in Coppola’s oeuvre who grow up next to a larger-than-life male personality or father figure (or both). Priscilla’s challenges with Elvis range from sexual deprivation to violent aggression to sheer boredom, and Spaeny brings a core of quiet strength to the role, opposite a well-modulated Elordi. Coppola’s attention to costume and production design (as well as music) is as detailed and sophisticated as ever, yielding both cultural and emotional commentary. It’s by turns sad, funny and eye-opening, thanks to Coppola’s characteristically delicate touch with tone, as the filmmaker uncovers a new, human story out of the shadow of pop history.
