A Person of the Forest

Eine Geistergeschichte. Das Präparat eines Orang Utans, verräumt in die Abstellkammer eines Museums, kommentiert Archivaufnahmen der kolonialen Umtriebe auf Sumatra, der Heimat, zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts: Männer in Weiß, weiße Männer, herrisch zeigend, Besitz ergreifend, zerstörerisch zupackend. Der Dschungel verwüstet und durch Plantagen ersetzt, die Primaten fallen aus den stürzenden Bäumen, die Indigenen schuften. Grimmig blickt es aus dieser Vergangenheit voller Zwang und Gewalt in unsere Gegenwart. Ein uraltes Grauen beschleicht uns. (Alexandra Seitz)

A phantom voice courses through the veins of colonial archival imagery. The machinery of tobacco and rubber production on Sumatra’s plantations fills the screen of early twentieth-century Dutch promotional films, while a simian ghost sifts through the ruins of these images, searching for tales of resistance long since lost. Amid spectres of colour and texture, the stuttering editing and presences conjured from sound, human and non human perspectives rally against the apparatus of imperial domination. (Victor Guimarães)
