El perro que no calla

Warum sollte ein Pizzabote bei Rot über die Kreuzung rasen für Leute, die er nicht kennt? Eine Frage aus der neoliberalen Arbeitswelt, die sich der sanftäugige Sebas erst stellt, nachdem er etliche Jobs und einige Kilos verloren hat. Stoisch und mit wechselnden Frisuren wandelt er durch eine in gewagten Ellipsen verzahnte Filmerzählung, worin der Zubereitung eines Auflaufs die gleiche lakonische Aufmerksamkeit zukommt wie dem Ausbruch einer Pandemie. Fünf verschiedene Kameraleute zeichnen für diese zwischen schwarzer Gesellschaftssatire und liebevoller Zugewandtheit changierenden Patchwork-Vignetten verantwortlich – und doch wirkt alles wie aus einem Guss. In THE DOG WHO WOULDN’T BE QUIET director Ana Katz foretells the pandemic with great humor and also postulates that life will prevail after not too long. The fantastical twist of this comedy arrives in the final act and everything has already occurred without our even noticing when it eventually does so.
Sebastian, a typical middle-class young Argentinian man, loses his job as a designer in a company because of his love for his dog. Now he has to figure out how to make a living. Katz portrays the current lack of job security, the impoverishment of the Argentine middle class, possible alternative forms of economy, and the mysterious logic of affections that divides all relationships.
All of this is achieved in admirable fashion via framing, the use of narrative ellipses, always signposted by the changing haircuts of the main character, the insertion of two animated sequences, and a deep love for the characters, including the dogs. In the cinema of Katz, chance and absurdity are what give order to the world, but this philosophical intuition is not mined for anguish nor cynicism, but rather vitality and comedy. (Roger Koza)
