Onna no mizumi

Woman of the Lake
Yoshida Kijū
Japan 1966
102 min
V'22

(Roland Domenig)

Mizuki Miyako has been married for eight years, and although she appears to be happy on the surface, she has grown tired of her husband, who shows no interest in anything but his work. Miyako begins an affair with Kitano, a young interior decorator, whom she permits to take nude pictures of her. However, on her way home from the hotel, the photos are stolen by an assailant. In her efforts to get the photos back, she follows the orders of the blackmailer and gets on a train. After a train accident, she ends up in a small town, where she meets Sakurai Ginpei, the alleged assailant. Instead of being afraid, however, Miyako feels an increasing attraction and ends up developing a purer love for him than for her husband and her lover.
Freely adapted from a novel by Nobel literature laureate Kawabata Yasunari, WOMAN OF THE LAKE was the first film made by the independent production company “Gendai Eigasha” which Yoshida had founded earlier in 1966 together with his wife and partner Okada Mariko. Like in his previous film A STORY WRITTEN WITH WATER, Yoshida continues to explore the theme of female sexuality. Using the motif of a woman in a photograph, he questions the relationship between the imaginary and the real. (Roland Domenig)
