(Bernd Brehmer)

A congregation of monks, a forest populated by female spirits and a Spanish painter from the 15th century are convoked in this unconventional courtroom drama by Catarina Vasconcelos. Combining modern music, historical exploration, contemporary preoccupations, lush nocturnal colours and a narration mostly rendered as on-screen text, NOCTURNO PARA UMA FLORESTA is deeply aware of the questions regarding gender, authorship and cancel culture that have emerged in recent years. But Vasconcelos’ approach to these hot-button issues is sharply critical, refreshingly ironic and beautifully surprising. (Cristina Álvarez López)
