Patricio Guzmán, beständiger, kritischer, die Geschichte seines geliebtgehassten Heimatlandes aufzeichnender und analysierender Chronist, dokumentiert den revolutionären Aufbruch in Chile. 2019 ausgelöst durch die Erhöhung der Metropreise, steht bald auch die Forderung nach einem Ende der diktatorischen Strukturen und einer neuen Verfassung im Raum. Schließlich gewinnt ein Linksliberaler die Neuwahlen und eine Indigena leitet die Verfassungskommission – die Utopie scheint möglich. Heute wissen wir, dass die Abstimmung am 5. September 2022 die Hoffnung, aus einem imaginierten ein reales Land zu machen, zunichte machen wird. Aber aufgeben war und ist, wie sich hier lernen lässt, keine Option. (Maria Marchetta)

It’s an incredible match of revolution and chronicler: the historic million-strong protests for reform in Chile come under the thoughtful and still hopeful gaze of Patricio Guzmán. But Guzmán’s of-the-moment film is no footnote to his oeuvre, but rather a galvanizing, superior entry among recent non-fiction efforts to portray popular movements both on Santiago’s streets and behind the scenes. As the unofficial film essayist laureate for Chile, Guzmán gracefully cedes the stage to the new generations and women-led groups who show their mettle in defying authoritarian structures, not just envisioning new worlds but trying to legislate them into being. With a variety of interviews and the humane curiosity that defines his films, Guzmán entertains the possibility that a freer, more just nation – long imagined by him and his fellow citizens – may someday exist.
