(Alexandra Seitz)

In the fishermen’s town of Camariñas, Rubio goes missing at sea. He is the experienced diver responsible for rescuing more than 40 bodies from shipwrecks so that they could be given a proper farewell. Now that he is the one lost at sea, who will return his body to land? LÚA VERMELLA tells the story of a community tormented by the ocean. As the people wait longer and longer, they are held captive by the landscape, transfixed. Most of the film is an exploration of these still figures and how they relate to their surroundings. They have to coexist with the sea, with its mist, its tides; they must live by its rule. “The monster is the sea,” says one of the characters, and as they name the beast, they start trying to fight it, each in their own way. Three witches will be summoned, the streams will be read, the earth will be surveyed. Will they ever be able to mourn Rubio? Lois Patiño’s second feature is a fiction made out of myth and its landscape. The tales that have always been told by the fire, while the ocean crashes outside, take the shape of an audio-visual fable that seems to have been forged and whispered before our very eyes, as a continuation of Millet’s “The Angelus”, which at once inspires and haunts the film. (Lucía Salas)
