Wie indigene Frauen in Peru Geschichten und Mythen ihrer Herkunft in Ponchos einweben, so verflicht die Regisseurin Kindheitserinnerungen mit ihrer Suche nach untergehenden Sprachen zu einer Hommage an die Großeltern. Die wurden einst von Franco ins Exil nach Mexiko getrieben. Während ihre geliebte Großmutter im Sterben liegt, fährt Protagonistin Adela mit Übersetzer Lucho vom Dschungel in die Hochebene der peruanischen Anden, um den Klang todgeweihter Sprachen zu kartieren. Die Natur spiegelt ihr von Trauer bestimmtes Seelenleben. Doppelt konfrontiert mit der Endlichkeit stellt sich ihr schmerzhaft die Frage nach der eigenen Identität. (Maria Marchetta)

Adela, a Mexican sound artist in her fifties, travels across Peru creating a sonic map of languages in danger of extinction. Accompanied by Lucio, her loyal guide and translator, she crosses the Andes, absorbing the sounds, stories and traditions of those she encounters along the way. The intimate trip triggers memories of her childhood, particularly those of her beloved grandfather—a Catalan republican exiled in Mexico. When news about the deteriorating health of her grandmother arrives, Adela’s journey intensifies, as past and present, recording and discovery, become ever more intertwined. With intricate sound design by Verónica Font and an eclectic musical tapestry, including pieces by Federico Mompou, Luc Ferrari, Botellita de Jerez, Pierre Schaeffer, Franz Schubert and compositions by Angélica Castelló herself (who plays Adela in the fiction), LEJOS DE LOS ÁRBOLES is a piercing meditation on memory, roots and legacy. In her third feature film, Catalan filmmaker Meritxell Colell weaves together archival material and staged flashbacks into a poetic and sensorial travelogue, immersing the spectator in Adela’s psyche and letting her become our guide in a far-reaching process of mourning and reconciliation.
