Heiraten? Kann man machen, wenn es keinen Stress bedeutet. Zu einem Casting gehen? Eigentlich nur gegen Bezahlung. Aber Luisa hat da noch eine – natürlich „bedeutungslose“ – Affäre mit Paco. Auch egal, es geht mehr darum, herauszufinden, wer wem wann und warum überhaupt etwas gestehen sollte. Selbst wenn es einmal eine Zeit des Aufbruchs gegeben hat, so findet sich Peredas bekanntes Ensemble diesmal als lakonisches Künstlertrio wieder, im prekären Kampf gegen Lebensroutine und eitlem Anspruchsdenken. Und als die Patchwork-Erzählung aus dem urbanen Mexiko dem magischen Realismus dann doch seine Reverenz erweist, trifft der Geist aus der Flasche auf trivialen Heißhunger. (Stephan Settele)  

“The Wish to Be a ‘Red Indian.’” To keep moving forward, to be someone else, to dream of another life. To want to be an actor, to embody other lives, experience other loves, have other names. Or maybe the other way around: to want a life contained within this one. Working with the same group of actors, as always, Nicolás Pereda has made a film about desire and its strange and contradictory relationship with reality. LÁZARO DE NOCHE presents a trio of old friends who met at a literature workshop and harbour the desire to be actors, as they jump from bed to bed in passionless romances. Inspired by texts by Mario Levrero and César Aira, Pereda films the daily life of this singular trio, as well as that of the director who is auditioning them for a possible film, as the quotidian slips into the comic or into what seems like a hidden layer of reality. Through non-synchronous sound, dubbing and simple foley effects, the real and the invented increasingly intermingle until the film becomes something else: the tale of Aladdin, who repeatedly makes a wish that can only be enjoyed in real life: to eat and eat and eat... Magic only works when it is tangible, physical and real. To be a “Red Indian”, like Kafka wrote. (Gonzalo de Pedro)
