„Nunca mas!“ – der berühmte Ausruf, mit dem der Prozess gegen Verantwortliche der argentinischen Militärdiktatur 1985 in Buenos Aires zu Ende ging. Nach 90 Tagen bezeugten Horrors, die vom öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehen auf U-matic-Bänder aufgenommen wurden; 530 Stunden Material, in EL JUICIO zu einem hochspannenden und tiefbewegenden Vierstünder vorzüglich verdichtet. Der nunmehr weiter Zeugnis ablegt: von den Problemen, mit denen sich ein rechtsstaatliches System konfrontiert sieht, das ein verbrecherisches zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen versucht. Since September 2022, the Trial of the Juntas has once again become a talking point in Argentina due to the success of Santiago Mitre’s ARGENTINA, 1985. EL JUICIO returns to the same subject. Working with 540 hours of footage from the archives of state TV channel ATC, Ulises de la Orden spent over 10 years boiling down this material into an account of just under three hours that narrates the trial of those most responsible for the crimes against humanity committed by the last Argentinian civic-military dictatorship (1976– 1983). The speeches of those who committed genocide and their lawyers, the testimonies of the victims, the reasoning of prosecutor Julio César Strassera and his first assistant Luis Gabriel Moreno Ocampo, the expressions of the participants and the movement of their bodies, the applause, the shouts, the silences all come together in a meticulous choreographic and dialectical whole in which abjection battles truth and perversion is met with argument. There are sequences that are painful to watch, others that cause us outrage, and no shortage of those that fill us with shame for what others have done. Most importantly, there are also scenes that reaffirm the courage to tell the truth and the non-negotiable search for justice. (Roger Koza)
