Unter der Oberfläche wohlverhaltener Konversation brodeln derweil große Emotionen: Bringst du deinen Freund mit nach Hause, weckt das Erwartungen und wilde Projektionen – die im Weiteren in der vom Vater angelegten Gartenlandschaft fröhlich durchdekliniert werden. Although Donghwa and Seonhee have been together for three years, he’s only now meeting her family. Yet as he drives his modest old car up the lane leading to his nominal stepparents’ mountain house, this first meeting comes across as more spontaneous than planned. Why has he waited so long? Maybe he simply prefers chance to preparation. At once pensive and upbeat, the young poet Donghwa moves through life seeking beauty in everyday objects. He is also the son of an influential attorney; as Seonhee’s sister will stubbornly remind him, his artistic values might just be an unthinking pose. Informed by actress Kang Soyi’s background, GEU JAYEONI NEGE MWORAGO HANI is focused on filial love and sincerity in art and relationships. While its gentle focus on natural and artificial light is in line with Hong Sangsoo’s recent films, it also harkens back to his earlier character studies about young men seeking truth and virtue only to discover the depth of their delusion. However, his 33rd feature is not so much about mocking the elasticity of judgement as it is about navigating the space between reality and words.
