Bilder der alltäglichen Klinikabläufe wechseln mit – in diskretem Abstand gefilmten – Gesprächen in seiner Praxis. Empathisch, aber nie gefühlig wendet Bini sich seinen Patient:innen zu, die offen von ihren Verletzungen und Ängsten erzählen. Ihm kommen wir nur nah, wenn der Film ihn als passionierten Pilzesammler zeigt, den Menschen aus seiner Praxis aber in einer berührenden Sequenz, in der ihre Körper die Spuren der Transition offenbaren. Gianluca Matarrese’s GEN_ follows the consultations of Dr. Maurizio Bini at a public hospital in Milan. His department oversees both in vitro fertilisation and gender-affirming care—two areas that have for some time been in the spotlight of conservative Italian politics. Bini is an in-demand doctor with a great capacity to connect with his patients. Openness, empathy and intuition prove as important as his medical experience and erudition. While Bini’s main concern is the wellbeing of those in his charge, he repeatedly faces challenges that must take into account—and sometimes supersede—political, legislative and corporate demands. Matarrese’s wide-ranging, dynamic documentary offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of the dreams, emotions, frustrations and difficulties experienced by a diverse array of people. Hormones, medication, sperm counts and frozen eggs are not all they need. Bini also works at bolstering their confidence, addressing their misconceptions, tempering their desires and making them aware of both alternatives to—and the unconsidered consequences of—their decisions.
