Les Enfants d'Isadora

Nach dem Unfalltod ihrer beiden Kinder im April 1913 choreografierte Isadora Duncan, die als Begründerin des modernen Tanzes gilt, ein Solo mit dem Titel „The Mother“, in dem sie dieses traumatische Erlebnis in einem zarten Bewegungszauber zu exorzieren versuchte. Ein Jahrhundert später konfrontieren sich vier sehr unterschiedliche Tänzerinnen mit dem künstlerischen Erbe einer persönlichen Tragik. Der Film versteht sich nicht als choreografisches Spektakel, sondern als behutsame Annäherung an ein Monument der klassischen Avantgarde. Auf subtile Weise evoziert er die utopische Vorstellung von einem Tanz, in dem jeder seine eigene Bewegung – son propre geste – findet. (Thomas Mießgang)

Having charmed Viennale audiences with his delicate miniatures LE PARC in 2016 and LA NUIT OÙ J’AI NAGÉ (co-directed with Kohei Igarashi) in 2017, Damien Manivel now returns with his most acclaimed film so far. Winner of the Best Director prize at Locarno earlier this year, LES ENFANTS D’ISADORA is an elegantly-constructed, immaculately-executed triptych about modern-day women in France, each of them somehow touched by the work of groundbreaking American dancer-choreographer Isadora Duncan. Three discrete chapters pivot around Duncan’s piece “Mother,” created in response to the tragic circumstances of her children’s death. The sections, wrote Sophie Monks Kaufman in “Sight&Sound”, “unfold with the meticulous procedural attention of a prima ballerina and end with a scene as perfectly judged as it is astonishingly moving.” Coming himself from a dance background, Manivel conveys the art form’s ephemeral magic in a way entirely accessible to both aficionados and newcomers alike. He’s aided immensely by the unfussily engaging contributions he elicits from his performers, ranging from the youthful Manon Carpentier to the septuagenarian international dance-eminence Elsa Wolliaston – whose graceful dignity dominates the breathtaking final "movement."
