In der deutschen Filmlandschaft landet Schilinskis Film wie ein UFO. Nichts sieht hier so aus oder klingt so, wie man es gewohnt ist. Mit radikaler Subjektivität verwebt IN DIE SONNE SCHAUEN vier Zeitebenen zu einem hell-dunklen Mosaik der Sinneswahrnehmungen, Erinnerungen und Traumata. Zwischen dem Ersten Weltkrieg und der Gegenwart wachsen vier Generationen junger Mädchen und Frauen auf einem Vierseithof in der Altmark auf. Nie weicht die Kamera in diesem Meisterstück privater Geschichtsschreibung von ihrer Seite, wenn sie mit unbedingter Wissbegier die Rituale des Erwachsenenlebens und Mysterien der Sterblichkeit erkunden. A farmstead in eastern Germany: a house, a barn, a yard, the nearby river, fields all around. Families have lived here for generations, although we only see four of them, through the eyes of their young women, watching how they experience childhood and adolescence; it’s always different for a girl. The narrative floats back and forth between the 1910s, the 1940s, the 1980s and the 2020s with fluidity and sensuality but also pure precision, less interested in telling a story than forging links based on motif and mood. There are everyday tasks, family gatherings, swimming trips, practical jokes, group photographs, repressed longings, casual cruelties, unabashed abuse, dreams of death that also sometimes come to pass. Time flows differently here—each episode can jump forward or backward at will and the future echoes back into the past as much as the other way around. There is suffering, but also so much peculiar wonder, great tunnels of hay, the taste of a strawberry ice cream, eels rippling through brackish water, a camera that sometimes squints in incredulity at what it’s seeing before launching itself into the air. The mind has its own temporality, and if history repeats itself again and again, each repetition still feels new. (James Lattimer)
