2011’s THE DEEP BLUE SEA marked Davies’ return to one of the subjects that has dominated his imagination: the United Kingdom in the period during and immediately following World War II. Whereas his previous film THE HOUSE OF MIRTH focused on a female protagonist crushed by the strict rules of social decorum, THE DEEP BLUE SEA is the incisive portrait of a woman driven against all reason to follow her passions, even to her own eventual detriment and demise.
Rachel Weisz plays Hester Collyer, the wife of a prominent High Court judge. Although their marriage is a pleasant one, defined by mutual care and consideration, it is not a passionate union. Hester finds what she is lacking when she meets Freddie, an RAF pilot whose emotional unpredictability ignites an erotic flame Hester simply cannot ignore. The tempestuous affair becomes all- consuming for Hester, compelling her to destroy the lives of all those around her.
Based on the titular play by Terence Rattigan, THE DEEP BLUE SEA is another powerful study of the human heart in conflict with the dominant social order. (Michael Sicinski)
