(Bert Rebhandl)

In Anwesenheit von Ilya Khrzhanovsky.

There’s world building in cinema, and then there is DAU. Over four years, maverick director Ilya Khrzhanovsky and his minions shot more than 700 hours of 35mm footage in a self-contained environment akin to THE TRUMAN SHOW (1998), materialising the work and private goings-on of a secret Soviet-era experimental research institute for physics. Two decades, umpteen controversies and fourteen films later, the “mother film” arrives, brandishing a Best Director prize from Venice. Epic in scope, scale, length and ambition, DAU is a decidedly unconventional biopic of Nobel-winning physicist Lev Landau (played by Greek conductor Teodor Currentzis), following him on the path to creating the USSR’s atomic bomb. Taking place from 1928 to 1968, it traces how Dau’s scientific idealism is kneecapped by the powerful apparatus of Soviet state security. Khrzhanovsky contrasts indelible, monumental imagery with bold intimacy, as the erosion of Dau’s autonomy becomes expressed in a series of petulant affairs. He litters the editing with hyper-montages that act like shots of quantum-physics-fuelled adrenaline, and hint at the further accomplishments of the DAU project, of which this provides a transfixing summary.
