Noch bevor Rasoulofs neues Werk dies Jahr in Cannes Premiere feierte, war der preisgekrönte Regisseur aus dem Iran nach Deutschland geflüchtet. Die patriarchale Theokratie, die ihn zu einer hohen Gefängnisstrafe verurteilt hatte, dekonstruiert er auf der Leinwand am privaten Beispiel: Ein Familienvater wird Richter am Islamischen Revolutionsgericht, die beiden Töchter sympathisieren mit den Protesten, die das Land seit September 2022 in Atem halten. Aus dem Familiendrama wird ein spannender Paranoia-Thriller, in den sich via Social-Media-Clips die blutige Realität schiebt: ein Aufstand gegen den Gottesstaat, der seine Bevölkerung zu ersticken droht. Expanding on the themes explored in his previous feature SHEYTAN VOJUD NADARAD (2020), dissident Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof considers the insidious nature of authoritarianism in the Islamic Republic. Iman (Misagh Zare), an investigator for the Islamic Courts, is on track to be promoted to a judgeship. But to get there, he must abandon his belief in the rule of law. Rasoulof’s film takes great pains to demonstrate how ordinary people are ethically compromised by the institutional pressures of the state. DANEH ANJEER MOGHADAS is based on the protests following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was killed by Iran’s Morality Police for not wearing her hijab. The uprising, the largest since the Green Movement of 2010, led to a violent crackdown by the regime. While Iman’s two daughters are unequivocal supporters of women’s rights, the film’s moral fulcrum is their mother Najmeh (Soheila Golestani). When she sees the viciousness of the regime firsthand, she starts to rethink everything she’s been taught her whole life. Can demands for liberal reform eventually supplant Iran’s tyrants, or does tyranny inevitably insinuate itself into every facet of life? (Michael Sicinski)
