Cinzas e nuvens

Der erkennbar auf analogem Material gedrehte Film nimmt sich alle Zeit für seine ruhige und genaue Beobachtung. Und korrespondiert so mit den Wächterinnen, die zusätzlich zur Videoüberwachung in portugiesischen Waldgebieten Tag und Nacht von hohen Türmen geduldig über die Landschaft schauen, um frühzeitig Brände zu entdecken. Im Vertrauen, dass der menschliche Blick ein Mehr wahrnimmt gegenüber der mechanischen Präzision der Kameras. Es ist wohl kein Zufall, dass es ausschließlich Frauen sind, die hier so ganz im Akt des beharrlichen Sehens aufgehen. (Barbara Kronsfoth)

From the top of a tower, Dina, Maria, Inês and others watch over the Portuguese countryside to prevent wildfires. CINZAS E NUVENS is a poetic description of this labour of love for the land deeply rooted in the senses, above all sight, and is hence deeply cinematic. Inspired by the tower’s architecture, the film is concerned with the notion of distance, depicting the surroundings and the women by alternating between various focal lengths. Displaying a kind of serene urgency, CINZAS E NUVENS stands gracefully at the rare intersection of landscape film, ecological documentary and artisanal experimental piece. (Salvador Amores)
